Product FAQ's
Which niches is the Redblock shower niche shelf compatible with?
The shelf is designed to fit shower niches with an inside width of 12 inches (before tiling). It's compatible with prefab niches from Kerdi Board SN (12×12, 12×20, 12×28), Wedi (12×12, 12×18, 12×26, 12×38), and Houseables Shower Niche.
Can I install this niche shelf into an existing shower?
This would certainly be possible, but only if there's no tile trim installed around the perimeter of your tiled shower niche. This is very uncommon since ceramic or porcelain tiles are usually installed on the shower wall and inside the niche. If by chance there was no tile trim, and the grout lines on each side of the niche are lined up horizontally, the grout could be removed from this grout line, and the shelf could slide in from the front. A more common scenario would be a niche that's tiled with a natural stone like marble, since the tile edges can be polished and tile trim is often not installed.
Can I install the Redblock recessed shower shelf with the rb3m logo facing down?
Yes. The RB3m logo is on only one side, and the finish is the same on both sides, so it can be flipped. You also do not need the washcloth hanger (long slot) facing the front of the niche; you can face it backwards if you prefer - the front and back of edges of the shelf are both CNC finished to the same high standard.
Why do you use 316L stainless steel?
We use a "Marine Grade" steel because Sea Salt (sodium chloride) and Chlorine corrode steel in the same way. And since chlorine bleach is used extensively in shower cleaning and disinfection products, it seemed appropriate and responsible to be the first shower shelf company to use a Marine grade steel for our shower niche shelves. But we go one step further and use a special grade of low-carbon 316 (the "L" in 316L) which further enhances it's corrosion resistance.
General Shower Niche Shelf FAQ's
What is a shower niche shelf and how is it typically used in modern bathrooms?
A shower niche shelf is a recessed shelf that's typically installed into a niche in the shower wall. It's one of the more popular shower storage solutions because it contains all of your shower essentials within easy reach, and it's recessed into the wall so it doesn't get in your way in the shower space. It's ideal smaller bathrooms because it creates plenty of storage for all your shower essentials but keeps them out of your way. It also enhances your shower experience and gives the shower area a modern look that's popular these days.
What are the benefits of adding a shower niche shelf to a shower remodel?
A shower niche with a cool shower niche shelf (or two... or three) is a great way to store all your shower accessories within easy reach, making it an important functional addition to your shower. But it can also enhance the aesthetic appeal of your shower by installing accent tile in the niche, making it a focal point of your shower. Or...you can create a more more subtle, seamless look by using the same tile in the niche as your did for your wall tile. There are endless possibilities.
How do I choose the right size and style of shower niche shelf for my bathroom?
An in wall shower shelf will always need to be installed in a shower niche because that's the only safe way to recess a shelf into the shower wall. As such, you must first decide if you want a tile shower niche with shelf as you primary shower storage. The next decision is the size of the niche that you prefer. The taller your niche, the more shelves you can instal into it, and the more bathing essentials you can fit into it. Your shower niche design can include a full wall niche, or as small as a 12x12 inch niche. This choice will be about how much storage you think you'll need in your shower/ bathroom design. Very low profile shelves like glass shelves or stainless steel shelves are a popular choice for shower niches. They both look very nice and maximize the interior storage space in the niche.
Are there different materials available for shower niche shelves, and which is best for wet environments?
Most people agree that stainless steel is the best material for shower shelves because it's strong and resists corrosion however, 304 stainless steel can indeed rust if it's exposed to chlorine bleach containing cleaning products, hard water. The best way to avoid this is to install a shelf made with 316 Grade stainless steel. If your shelf is made of regular 304 Grade SS (99% of shelves are), you will have to be more careful. It's still possible to avoid corrosion as long as you make sure that you're not using chlorine bleach cleaning products during regular cleaning, and make sure you install a water softener if your area has hard water.
What are some popular design ideas for shower niche shelves?
The most popular shower niche shelf designs are stainless steel and glass because of the visual appeal of a low profile shelf over a bulky tiled shelf. Many people install tiled shelves that match their bathroom niche tile and shower tile because they perceive this to be the most economical option. The problem is that homeowners often forget that there's extra labor cost involved in attaching tile to these shelves, and it takes time, skill, and experience to do it right. But the biggest reason that they're less popular is that most homeowners prefer sleek look of the thinner shelves over these bulky tiled shelves.
